Sportaza in Italy: What Residents Should Know

Sportaza's website has an Italian version, but an Italian version is not an authorisation. Here we separate online presence, foreign licence and position within the ADM system (Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli, the Italian customs and monopolies agency), with the reference rules and the date of verification.

Situation as of 8 October 2026

  • Online presence: sportaza.com has an Italian version, promotions in euro and support also in Italian.
  • Licence: ALSI-202606064-FI2, issued by the Government of the Autonomous Island of Anjouan (Union of the Comoros). It is not a licence from a European Union state.
  • ADM licence: the official website consulted does not state one. The actual status must be checked in ADM's up-to-date list, because online presence and a foreign licence are not equivalent to an Italian licence.
  • Main consequences: no protection from the ADM system, winnings to be declared as miscellaneous income, possible blocking of the domain, possible payment blocks.

This page describes the regulatory framework and verifiable facts. It is not legal or tax advice: for an assessment of your own case, speak to a lawyer or an accountant. The rules cited are linked to the official text on Normattiva (the Italian official legislation database).

Online presence and authorisation are not the same thing

The question "Is Sportaza available in Italy?" mixes two different aspects. The first is technical: the site can be reached from an Italian address, has Italian among its 16 languages, accepts euro and offers translated promotions. The second is legal: in Italy, gambling for money is reserved to the State, which grants it under licence. For remote gambling, that is online, licences are issued by the Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli (ADM, formerly AAMS) under the reorganisation of the sector set out in Legislative Decree 41 of 25 March 2024.

An operator that takes bets from residents of Italy without a licence operates outside this system, whatever licence it holds elsewhere. The Anjouan licence authorises Sportaza under Anjouan's rules; it has no effect in the Italian legal system.

Verified factIn Italy, taking remote gambling requires an ADM licence; ADM publishes the list of blocked gambling sites.
InterpretationFor a resident of Italy, playing on Sportaza means playing on a site that is not authorised in Italy, with the consequences described on this page.
To be verifiedWhether Sportaza domains appear in the list of blocked sites: ADM's PDF cannot be consulted automatically and must be checked directly (instructions below).
Not confirmedWhether the operator formally excludes Italian residents in its terms: Sportaza's terms are not public to search engines and third-party sources do not include Italy in their partial lists of excluded countries.

How to check whether a site holds an ADM licence

ADM publishes on its portal the list of licence holders and of the sites authorised for remote gambling. An authorised site shows the ADM logo and the licence details in its footer, and operates on a domain registered with the Agency. To check an operator:

  1. open the adm.gov.it portal and look for the section on remote gambling and authorised sites;
  2. search for the brand name or the domain;
  3. compare the licence number shown in the site's footer with the one in the official list.

The official website consulted shows no ADM licence details: the footer cites the Anjouan licence and a seal of the Tobique Gaming Commission (Canada). To know whether a domain is authorised in Italy, the ADM list currently in force must in any case be consulted.

Blocked sites: what is ADM's "blacklist"

ADM periodically updates a list of unauthorised gambling domains that Italian internet service providers are required to block. When a domain is blocked, anyone trying to visit it from an Italian connection is redirected to an information page of the Agency. Offshore operators often react by opening "mirror" domains with similar names, which in turn are added to the list in later updates.

The official reference page is ADM — Blocked gambling websites, which makes the up-to-date list available. At the time of our check, the PDF of blocked sites could not be consulted automatically. To check it yourself: open the file, use your PDF reader's search function (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F) and search for "sportaza". Each row shows the blocked domain; the date of the list is shown in the document's header.

VPNs and alternative domains

Using a VPN or a "mirror" domain to reach a blocked site does not make the gambling authorised. Many operators, moreover, forbid in their terms the use of tools that mask your location and may close the account and withhold winnings when they detect them. It is one of the most cited reasons for withdrawal disputes in user reviews of offshore sites.

What the law provides for players

Article 4 of Law 401 of 13 December 1989 punishes the unlawful operation of games and betting. Paragraph 3 provides that anyone who takes part in unlawfully operated games or bets, outside cases of complicity in the offence, is punished with up to three months' detention or a fine from €51 to €516. It is a contravention, that is the least serious type of offence in the Italian criminal system.

The application of the rule to online gambling on foreign sites is debated in legal scholarship and case law, in particular for operators licensed in another European Union state, for whom the European principles of freedom to provide services come into play. These arguments do not apply in the same way to an operator with a non-EU licence such as Sportaza. We have no reliable data on how often the rule is applied to individual players and we make no predictions: the relevant point is that the rule is in force.

How winnings are taxed

On sites with an ADM licence the taxes are settled by the licence holder and the player does not have to declare the winnings. On foreign sites the situation changes depending on the operator's licence:

Tax treatment of winnings for a resident of Italy
OperatorTreatmentRule
ADM licence holderNo declaration: taxes settled at sourceRules on public gaming
Operator licensed in an EU/EEA stateWinnings excluded from income, as for ADM sitesArt. 69, paragraph 1-bis, TUIR (Italian consolidated income tax act)
Non-EU operator (like Sportaza, Anjouan licence)Miscellaneous income to be declared for the full amount received in the year, without deducting losses, at ordinary IRPEF (Italian personal income tax) ratesArt. 67, paragraph 1, letter d), and art. 69 TUIR

From 1 January 2026 the IRPEF rates are 23% up to €28,000, 33% from €28,000 to €50,000 and 43% above €50,000 (2026 budget law). Winnings are added to other income, so the tax on them depends on the overall bracket. Winnings must be reported in the tax return among miscellaneous income (section RL of the Modello Redditi Persone Fisiche, the individual income tax return form).

An example to understand the order of magnitude. This is a purely mathematical example, not tax advice: assuming €30,000 of taxable income and €5,000 of additional taxable winnings, total income rises to €35,000 and stays entirely within the €28,000–€50,000 bracket. With the 2026 rates the additional €5,000 is therefore all taxed at 33%, for €1,650 of additional gross IRPEF, before deductions, surcharges and other elements of the actual case. The actual calculation depends on total income and the individual tax situation: for a real tax return you need to consult an accountant.

The source of the legislative text is the TUIR (Presidential Decree 917/1986).

The protections a resident of Italy does not have on Sportaza

For anyone who has difficulty controlling their gambling this is the most important point: self-exclusion registered in Italy does not prevent access to Sportaza. If you have self-excluded from legal gambling, an offshore site bypasses the very protection you chose. Guidance and useful numbers are on the responsible gambling page.

Payments from Italy

Transactions to unlicensed operators may be blocked or reported by intermediaries. Some banks and several European-licensed e-wallets refuse payments to gambling sites that are not authorised in the customer's country; incoming withdrawals may be subject to anti-money-laundering checks, which require you to document the origin of the funds. Cryptocurrencies are often offered as an alternative, with risks of their own (exchange-rate volatility, irreversibility of transfers, reporting obligations for crypto-assets). Further detail is on the payments page and in the guide on cryptocurrencies on Sportaza.

Gambling advertising in Italy

Decree-Law 87/2018 (the "Decreto Dignità", or Dignity Decree) bans in Italy any form of advertising, including indirect, of games and bets with cash winnings. For this reason we are wary of content that presents a gambling site in promotional tones ("win now", "the best", "100% safe"). Sportaza.ltd is informational in purpose: it describes the operator, its terms and its limits, and openly states the commercial nature of the links to the official website (disclaimer).

If the site shows you the ADM page

If, when opening a Sportaza address from an Italian connection, a page of the Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli appears reporting an unauthorised site, the domain has been added to the list of blocked sites and your internet service provider is blocking access to it. It is not a technical fault. If you have a balance in the account, contact the operator by email to ask how to withdraw it, without using tools to bypass the block.

If you already have a Sportaza account

  • Document everything: keep receipts of deposits and withdrawals, chat transcripts and emails. They are needed both for any disputes and for the tax return.
  • Withdraw the balance you do not intend to play: funds left in the account remain subject to the operator's rules, including in the event of inactivity or account closure.
  • Set your own limits: if the site does not offer deposit limits, use your bank's gambling-transaction block or a fixed budget on a dedicated prepaid card.
  • Consider closing the account: how to close the account and recover the balance is explained in the guide limits, self-exclusion and account closure.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sportaza legal in Italy?

The official website consulted does not state an ADM licence. Sportaza instead declares an Anjouan licence, which is not equivalent to an Italian licence. To determine the status of the domain in Italy, the up-to-date ADM lists and the rules in force must be checked.

Does Sportaza have an ADM or AAMS licence?

According to the public legal information consulted on 8 October 2026, the official website's footer cites the Anjouan licence ALSI-202606064-FI2 and a seal of the Tobique Gaming Commission (Canada), but shows no ADM licence details. For the Italian status, the ADM list currently in force must be consulted. AAMS is the old name of the Agency, now ADM.

What does someone playing on Sportaza from Italy risk?

In criminal terms, art. 4, paragraph 3, of Law 401/1989 provides for up to three months' detention or a fine from €51 to €516 for anyone taking part in unlawfully operated games. In practical terms: no ADM protection, winnings to be declared, possible domain and payment blocks.

Do winnings on Sportaza have to be declared?

Yes. Winnings from operators with a non-EU licence are miscellaneous income (art. 67 TUIR) to be declared for the full amount received, without deducting losses, at ordinary IRPEF rates. The exemption in art. 69, paragraph 1-bis, applies only to operators with an EU/EEA licence.

Why does Sportaza have an Italian site if it is not authorised?

International operators translate their sites for many markets and the language does not depend on national authorisations. The Italian version is a technical and commercial fact, not an indication of legality for residents of Italy.

Does ADM self-exclusion also apply on Sportaza?

No. The single self-exclusion register concerns ADM licence holders. On Sportaza only the operator's internal self-exclusion applies, which must be requested separately.
